Split Earlobes

Split earlobes are as the name suggests; noticeable splits or tears in the soft part at the bottom of the ear. Many people have their ears pierced, often more than once. The purpose of piercing the ears is to have a tiny hole made in the ear so that earrings can be worn. This can be done in either ear, or in both, depending on the individual’s personal preference.

Piercing the ears has been performed for many, many years, with people (both men and women) choosing to use this as a way of expressing their own unique style or identity.

When the earlobes become split, the original hole has become enlarged and may even have torn right through the earlobe. This mainly happens as a result of having worn earrings that are particularly heavy, or may have been pulled out of the ear, damaging the skin and soft tissue. Some people like the look of earrings that create a larger hole in the ear. This is often done gradually as the size of the earring is increased over time. In many of these cases, the person’s style preference changes over time and when the earring is removed, it leaves behind a large, permanent hole. Ageing can also cause a person’s earlobes to naturally become larger or stretched. For pierced ears, a stretched earlobe can also stretch the small hole and make it appear elongated, like a small tear in the ear.

Chester Cosmetic Surgery can perform a ‘split earlobe’ procedure. This works to repair any damage that’s been caused as a result of wearing jewellery in the ears. The procedure is relatively quick and straightforward and can restore a more natural appearance of the ears.
